Service Description

In 2018, Lisbon was voted the ‘Best City Destination’ in Europe for the third consecutive year, at the 25th World Travel Awards (WTA) - known as the “World Tourism Oscars”. Lisbon won the distinction over 12 European destinations which included Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, Moscow, Geneva, Rome and Venice. Lisbon is the second oldest city in Western Europe and, as one of the oldest cities in the world, it’s fair to say Lisbon is steeped in history. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleyways sprinkle themselves over the hills and tell a different tale to every passer willing to listen. Portugal’s capital city is known for its stunning architecture, its authentic tram rides and, of course, the custard tarts. Some neighborhoods kept their original charm almost untouched and have many stories to tell. Our live, virtual, interactive one-hour walk will begin at the Graca viewpoint. The city of Lisbon is set among 7 hillsides, each offering its own unique view of the city. Graca is the residential district. Here we will get an introduction to the city's landscape, its history, geography, and urban development. Graca was a 19th-century extension of the city, created during the industrial revolution when housing was needed for the factory workers. We will then walk down to the Alfama district, which is a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses that line the steep hill. On our way, we will see urban artwork depicting Amalia, the Portuguese “queen of fado” (queen of song). We will also come to understand the importance of her song in Portuguese culture. Then, we will be at our second viewpoint, known as Portas do Sol Viewpoint. Here, we will be able to see the Moorish walls of the city and perceive how the viewpoint got its name. From there, let’s walk down the narrow streets of Alfama and learn how it has kept its urban structure throughout time, and why the Tagus River is so important to the city’s development. We will chat about how tourism has changed what was once a lower-class district into the well-visited place it is today. We will conclude our walk near the Fado Museum. $79 for each additional screen (does not apply to corporate customers.) * This tour is not designed for our corporate customers.
