The Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, are known for their rugged volcanic isles and white-sand beaches. Tenerife is the most populated island of the eight Canary islands and also the most populated island of Spain. San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a town in the northern part of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, founded at the end of the XV century and considered one of the most important historical, religious and university centers. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and an interesting archetype of the territory-town, a beautiful example of an unfortified town and also forerunner of new towns founded in America (like Havana or Lima). During this one-hour tour, we will jump into the past and discover the incredible history and culture through architecture and protagonists. We will start from the Villa de Abajo (“low city”) in the square of Adelantado and discover important buildings such as the town hall, Saint Miguel hermitage and the convent of Saint Catherine. We will then reach and focus on the highlights of the Villa de Arriba (“high city”): the Cathedral with a beautiful neoclassical facade and a dome, the Theatre Leal, and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, the first Church on the Island, with a high tower symbol of the town. Along its streets, which still retain the original layout of the sixteenth century, we will look at many residences with interesting traditional architecture, that are reflective of a time centuries ago and the noble families who lived here.
