The streets leading toward Edinburgh Castle are filled with characters and legends.
On the Lawnmarket, stories of Deacon Brodie reveal a darker side of the city. By day, Brodie was a respected craftsman and city official. By night, he became infamous for a secret criminal life.
Then there are Edinburgh’s mysterious “closes.”
These tiny lanes and courtyards branch away from the Royal Mile, creating a dense medieval layout unlike most modern cities. They also help explain Edinburgh’s old nickname, “Auld Reekie.”

At the top of Castlehill stands Edinburgh Castle, one of Scotland’s most recognizable landmarks.
