The German City That Looks Like a Christmas Card Come to Life

Historic buildings, narrow streets, glowing market stalls, and a castle rising above it all.

Heidelberg already has the ingredients of a classic old-world European destination.

During the Christmas season, they come together in a way that can make the German city look remarkably close to a holiday postcard.

Heidelberg’s Christmas Market is not limited to one square.

It spreads across several locations throughout the historic Old Town, allowing visitors to walk from one festive area to another through decorated streets and picturesque lanes.

For the 2026 season, the celebrations include markets across six squares.

That means the historic center itself becomes part of the experience rather than simply serving as a backdrop..

Тhe holiday experience changes as you move through Heidelberg.

University Square hosts the largest section of the Christmas Market, while Market Square becomes a wooden Christmas village.

At Kornmarkt, more than 100 illuminated fir trees create what the city calls its Winter Woodland, complete with seasonal decorations and a Nativity scene.

There are also around 140 individual market booths spread through the Old Town, combining holiday food, gifts, and regional Christmas traditions.
