Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is a historic city in Central Europe, divided into two distinct districts by the River Danube. Buda lies on the western bank of the river and is known for its hilly, wooded landscape, while Pest stretches across the flat eastern side. The city enjoys four distinct seasons, with warm summers, colorful autumns, cold winters, and mild springs. Centuries old and rich in history, Budapest is filled with hidden stories, remarkable architecture, and an atmosphere that invites leisurely exploration. On this live, interactive 60-minute virtual walking tour, we will explore the historic Buda Castle District, beginning with a stroll and discussion about the secret medieval passageways beneath the castle. Buda Castle sits atop a hill that is almost hollow underneath, containing caves, tunnel systems, and cellars that were used for various purposes throughout history. As a historian, your guide will explain how and why these underground networks were created and used. As we continue our walk, we’ll uncover traces of the Middle Ages and learn about the ancient Hungarian kings who once ruled from this strategic hilltop. We’ll also see monuments and architectural remnants from the era of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Buda Castle and Castle Hill, part of the Hungarian kings’ palace complex dating back to the 18th century, were heavily damaged during World War II but later rebuilt and are now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
