Chicago is a bustling metropolis in the Midwest located on the shores of Lake Michigan in northeastern Illinois. Nicknamed the “Windy City”, Chicago has a continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Chicago’s landscape includes vibrant green parks, sandy beaches along the lakefront, and towering skyscrapers including the 110-story Willis Tower. Join us for an eye-opening, live, 60 minute walking tour through Chicago's South Side, where we'll trace the complex history that has shaped this community. As we follow our expert local guide, we'll learn about the oppressive housing policies, racial violence, disinvestment, and infrastructure decisions that deliberately segregated and disenfranchised African Americans in Chicago. We'll discuss how restrictive covenants barred Black families from owning property outside the Black Belt. We'll see examples of the substandard public housing projects that replaced vibrant Black neighborhoods. We'll also examine how major transportation projects further isolated the South Side. But while acknowledging the deep injustices of the past, we'll also highlight the resilience, culture, and community building of South Side residents. We'll celebrate recent positive developments, like economic revitalization efforts, new investment, and cultural attractions that showcase the area's rich history. Join us for a thoughtful journey through this historically marginalized but vibrant community.
