Join us for a live, virtual 60-minute walking tour through London’s vibrant LGBTQ+ history, beginning at Oxford Circus and winding through the iconic streets of Soho. Along the way, your expert guide will bring to life the stories of trailblazing individuals and pivotal moments that shaped the community. At Oxford Circus, hear about the courageous lives of Victorian-era queer icons Fanny and Stella, before continuing to Liberty, where the story of Oscar Wilde, the Aesthetic Movement, and the consequences of his 1895 trial unfold. As we move through Carnaby Street, discover the revolutionary fashion of the Swinging Sixties, led by figures like John Stephen and embraced by cultural icons including Sean Connery. At the “Spirit of Soho” mural, explore the meaning and history of the Rainbow Flag at the center of the local community. In Golden Square, learn about the remarkable life of the gender nonconforming 18th-century diplomat and spy Chevalier d’Eon, followed by a visit to Old Compton Street, where the secret language of Polari and the wit of Kenneth Williams reveal a hidden layer of queer history. The tour continues with powerful stories of resilience and activism, including the legacy of the Admiral Duncan pub and the events surrounding the 1999 bombing, as well as the activism of figures like Mark Ashton. You’ll also explore the rise of modern LGBTQ+ nightlife at G.A.Y. Bar, the enduring cultural significance of Comptons, and the life of Quentin Crisp.
