Richardson's Beach, known locally as Richardson Ocean Park, sits along the Keaukaha coastline on the eastern shore of Hawai'i Island, the Big Island, approximately two miles south of downtown Hilo. The Big Island is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, shaped by five volcanoes and home to some of the most geologically active terrain on earth. Hilo sits on the island's windward side, making it one of the wettest cities in the United States, with lush tropical vegetation year-round and temperatures that remain comfortably between 70°F and 85°F. The beach itself is a natural wonder, one of the only shores in the Hilo area featuring both black volcanic sand and shimmering green olivine crystals, framed by ancient lava rock formations and fed by freshwater springs that rise through the ocean floor. Join us for a live, one-hour cultural walking tour along one of the most historically significant coastlines in the Pacific. This experience explores the living culture of the Native Hawaiian people, the Kanaka Maoli, through the lens of the land itself. Your guide will walk you from the water's edge to the ancient fishponds, through the story of the traditional Hawaiian village and the mountain-to-sea land system that sustained it, and into the sacred world of the kapu system and the four great Hawaiian gods. On the horizon, the sacred mountain Maunakea anchors every conversation, its name, its meaning, and its place at the center of one of the most important Indigenous rights stories in the United States today. This is not a history lesson.
