Thessaloniki has been influenced by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Jewish communities, creating a fascinating cultural mosaic. With 15 UNESCO-listed monuments, it is often called a “city museum,” where history can be discovered around nearly every corner. Join this live, virtual 60-minute walking tour through the historic heart of Thessaloniki as your guide brings the city’s remarkable past to life. During our walk, we will explore some of the city’s most important landmarks, adapting our route as we move through the lively streets of the historic center. Among the highlights is the Church of Saint Demetrius, the city’s most important religious site, dedicated to Thessaloniki’s patron saint who, according to tradition, protected the city many times throughout its history. If possible, we will step inside the church to admire its beautiful interior and learn about its deep spiritual and historical significance. Along the way, we will also discover monuments that reveal Thessaloniki’s many layers of history, including the impressive Arch of Galerius and the Rotonda, remarkable remains from the powerful Roman Empire. We will pass through the Roman Forum, once the bustling center of public life in ancient Thessaloniki, and continue to the Bey Hamam, also known as the Baths of Paradise, an elegant reminder of the city’s Ottoman era.
