During a virtual tour of Kyoto last month, I experienced something that still makes me smile.

Our guide was leading us down a seemingly ordinary alleyway when they suddenly stopped at what looked like a plain wooden wall. "This is something most tourists never notice," they said, sliding open a hidden door to reveal a tiny, exquisite garden courtyard with a miniature waterfall.

What made this moment special wasn't just the secret garden, but the elderly Japanese woman tending to the moss plants who looked up, surprised to see a camera. Rather than being bothered, she smiled warmly and began showing our guide her collection of bonsai trees that she'd been cultivating for over 40 years.

Through translation, we learned she maintains this hidden garden as a personal sanctuary that few locals even know exists. She permitted our guide to film her demonstrating traditional pruning techniques that had been passed…
